The ¼" incremental sole lines help guide you in determining the correct lie angle adjustment. For every ¼" the center of the sole impact mark is away from the engraved center sole hash, a lie adjustment of 1° is needed (adjust more upright for impact marks towards the toe, and flat for marks toward the heel).
